Chandigarh: Police in Punjab province said on Sunday they had foiled a drug-smuggling operation by Pakistani smugglers, arresting two people and recovering 20kg of heroin dropped by a drone from them, in a major blow to cross-border smuggling.
Police chief Gaurav Yadav said after receiving information that Pakistani smugglers were trying to inflow heroin, Fazilka’s police team conducted an operation near Rano village in Fazilka, where the defendants were expected to arrive after using drones to retrieve a shipment of heroin dropped from the other side of the border.
The defendants, Subeg Singh and Sandip Singh, tried to escape on a motorcycle after seeing the police line.
Police arrested them after a brief scuffle and seized 10 packets of heroin weighing 20 kilograms, he added. Assistant Inspector-General of Police Lakbhir Singh said more arrests were expected.
