Hyderabad: Telangana is set to break new records as farmers carry out extensive planting operations for this year’s Yasangi (Rabi) season.
As of Wednesday, the state had planted a total of 2.856 million acres, compared with 4.785 million acres normally planted for the season.
However, this is almost double the 1.481 million acres planted in last year’s Yasangi season.
Initially, planting in the Yasangi season was slow due to erratic rains coupled with delays in harvesting.
However, it has picked up the pace in the past few weeks. A similar situation prevailed in the last Yasangi season, when cultivated area expanded to 6.313 million acres.
Paddy continues to dominate the Yasangi crop season. According to the latest report of the Ministry of Agriculture, the rice planting area is about 1.798 million acres, accounting for nearly 60% of the total planting area.
As of the same period on January 10 last year, due to factors such as out-of-season rainfall, the area sown with rice was only 385,000 mu.
Officials attributed it to the increased availability of water, electricity and other facilities in Telangana. Currently, rice is in various stages of cultivation from transplanting to tillering in different parts of the state.
Corn acreage in Telangana state also rose to 321,000 acres as of Wednesday, compared to 207,000 acres a year earlier.
Soybeans totaled 37.8 million acres, down slightly from last year’s 409,000 acres. Planting of oilseeds has also slowed, but officials say it will increase rapidly in the coming weeks.
Oilseed plantings stood at 244,000 acres as of Thursday, compared with 353,000 acres in the previous Yasangi season.
“In many places, rice cultivation is at the tillering stage, especially in Khammam, Warangal and Medak. Pulses are in various stages from vegetative growth to flowering. At this pace, we expect the overall crop area this season to exceed that of last season’s Yasangi A record 6.313 million acres,” an Agriculture Department official said.
