New Delhi: India goalkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant is expected to miss most of cricket in 2023 after tearing three key ligaments in his right knee.
A report from ESPNCricinfo says Panter miraculously survived a horrific car crash on Dec. 30 that tore three key ligaments in his right knee, two of which were most recently operated on on Jan. 6. Reconstruction of the middle ligament, while reconstruction of the third torn ligament is expected six weeks later.
“All three ligaments of the knee — the anterior cruciate, posterior cruciate and medial collateral ligament, which are necessary for movement and stability — were torn in Panter’s case.”
“It is understood that both the PCL and MCL were reconstructed during the most recent surgery. Panter will need to undergo another operation to rebuild his ACL, but doctors will wait at least six weeks before proceeding,” the report said .
As such, Pant is in danger of missing at least six months, which could affect his chances of returning to fitness and participating in the 2023 ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November in India.
Pant, 25, suffered multiple injuries when his car collided with a road divider on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway at around 5.30am on December 30 and caught fire. The horrific crash happened between Manglaur and Narsan in the Haridwar district of Uttarakhand.
Pant was initially admitted to the Multispecialty and Trauma Center at Saksham Hospital and then to Max Hospital in Dehradun. He was driving alone in his Mercedes on his way from New Delhi to his hometown of Roorkee.
On January 4, the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced that Pant will be transferred by air ambulance from Dehradun to Mumbai for surgery and further treatment, where he is currently under the direct supervision of Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, Head of Center Kokilaben, Andheri West, Mumbai Doctor of Sports Medicine and Director of Arthroscopy and Shoulder Services at Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.

The report also said doctors had not given a firm timeline for how long Pant would need to return to cricket training. It added that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and selectors had concluded that the wicketkeeper-batter would be out for at least six months.
