Slash: The Odisha government on Sunday enforced Regulation 144 in Cuttack following a stampede during the Makar Mela in the Singhanath Temple area yesterday that killed a woman and injured several others.
The government has restricted worshipers from entering the Singh Na Temple.
“Due to the expected breach of peace and law and order, Section 144 was implemented in the temple to prevent the public from entering the T-bridge (to the temple entrance) and in and around the temple,” Badamba ALJ said. “These restrictions will be in effect from today until January 16 to maintain law and order,” he said.
The incident happened on Saturday when Makar Mela rushed over the Gopinathpur-Badamba T-bridge over the River Mahanadi in Athagarh.
One person was killed and nine were injured in a stampede as devotees went to pray for blessings at the seventh-century Singhana temple in Baramba during the Makarmela festival.
More than a dozen minors were injured in the stampede, according to officials.
Dr Ranjan Kumar Barik of Baramba Hospital said: “One person died and nine were injured in the incident, three of whom were referred to another hospital in Cuttack.”
