Chandigarh: Haryana police have arrested a woman for allegedly harboring Amritpal Singh and his accomplice Papalpreet Singh at her home in the state’s Kurukshetra district, an official said on Thursday.
In another development, Punjab police said they had arrested a man who was allegedly part of the radical preacher’s private security agency. Tejinder Singh Gill, a resident of Mangewal Village, Khanna District, Ludhiana District, is in charge of security at Amritpal Singh.
The Haryana police said the woman arrested in Shahabad, Kurukshetra district, has been identified as Baljit Kaur.
“We have arrested the woman who harbored Amlipal and his accomplice Papal Preet Singh at her home in Shahabad on Sunday. The woman has been handed over to the Punjab Police, ” Superintendent Surinder Singh Bhoria of Kurukshetra told PTI over the phone. He also said the woman had known Papalpreet Singh for more than two years.
Pope Singh is considered one of Amripal Singh’s mentors and has been working closely with the radical preacher, officials said. He was seen on Saturday on a motorcycle with Amritpal Singh on the back seat to escape a police crackdown on his gear.
The two-wheeler was found abandoned near a canal in Jalandhar. Photos and CCTV footage that have surfaced on social media show the fugitive, along with some of his assistants, used several vehicles including a Mercedes, a Brezza SUV, an Isuzu pickup, a motorcycle and a Motorized trolley.
Punjab police said efforts were underway to catch the fleeing missionary and several of his aides and members of his team had been detained or arrested.
Gill, who was part of Amritpal Singh’s security agency, had displayed weapons in pictures and videos on social media without a weapons license, they said. A FIR was registered against him under Section 188 of the IPC (Disobedience to an order duly issued by a public servant).
Officials said their investigation revealed that Gill was also involved in the Ajnala incident and that the Ajnala police would take action against him alone.
Last month, some supporters of Amritpal Singh stormed the Ajnala police station near Amritsar with swords in hand to secure the radical’s release. An associate of the missionary, raising concerns about the return of pro-Khalistan militants to the state bordering Pakistan.
