Helsinki: A Finnish businessman said on Thursday that he had made an offer for Manchester United, Finnish national broadcaster Yle reported on Thursday. United are currently owned by the American Glazer family, who announced in November that they were preparing to sell the club.
According to foreign media reports, Manchester United’s sale price is estimated to exceed 5 billion euros ($5.45 million), according to Xinhua News Agency. However, Finnish businessman Thomas Zilliacus estimated in his announcement that the club’s current market value is less than $3.9 billion, or 3.6 billion euros.
Zilliacus, 69, was Nokia’s Asia director in the 1980s and 1990s, making his fortune through real estate deals, stocks and starting companies.
In sports, Zilliacus is the chairman of the Finnish football club HJK and co-owner of the Jokerit professional ice hockey team in Helsinki.
Other candidates to buy Manchester United include Britain’s richest man Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.
In addition, Paris Saint-Germain boss Nasser Href is believed to have played a major role in the bid to Manchester United.
Representatives of United’s current bosses are waiting to see if there will be any further purchase offers.
Football’s European governing body, UEFA, bans ownership in several clubs competing in the same competition.
Ratcliffe also owns French club OGC Nice and Swiss club Lausanne, while Qatar’s QSI owns PSG. However, according to media reports, the rule does not apply to minority shareholders, while QSI is targeting United Airlines.
