Toronto: Khalistani’s threat to India continues unabated, with anti-India elements recently showing cowardice by defaced and spray-painted graffiti on Canada’s Mahatma Gandhi statue.
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning near the town hall in Hamilton, Ontario, where the statue, donated by the Indian government, sits, according to the Daily Hunter.
A Khalistani flag was also found on a six-foot-tall bronze statue covered in paint and abusive graffiti of Mahatma Gandhi and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, according to a video of the vandalism.
While Hamilton police said they were investigating the case, attacks on Indian facilities and temples by Khalistani supporters are on the rise in the North American country.
Hindu temples across Canada have been hit by a string of attacks starting in 2023, including nearly six incidents of vandalism, graffiti, burglaries and burglaries.
In January, Brampton’s Gauri Shankar Mandir was attacked and the walls of the temple were painted with the words “Khalistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad”.
It was followed by an attack in February at Ram Temple in Mississauga, which was vandalized with anti-India slogans, sending shockwaves through the Indian community.
Last July, the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Vishnu Mandir in Richmond Hill in the Greater Toronto Area was vandalized and had graphic text painted over it.
Indian-born MP Chandra Arya recently called on the Ottawa government to take the matter “seriously”.
“The attack on Brampton’s Gauri Shankar Mandir is the latest attack on a Hindu temple in Canada by anti-Hindu and anti-India groups. From the hate on social media and now the physical attack on a Hindu temple, what’s next?” Arya Said.
“I call on all levels of government in Canada to start taking this seriously.”
