Mazar-i-Sharif: Heavy rains and flash floods have destroyed homes and farmland in northern Afghanistan, Afghan Provincial Police spokesman Mohammad Asif Waziri said Friday.
Heavy rains triggered destructive floods on Thursday night, partially or completely destroying more than 300 homes and 3,000 acres of farmland in and around the Zari district of northern Balkh province, Waziri told reporters, Xinhua reported.
The flood also killed many cattle in Zari district and adjacent areas, the official said.
No casualties have been reported so far, the official said, adding that rescue teams had been dispatched to the affected areas to help affected families.
The floods also cut off connections between Karat, the capital of Zabul province, and seven districts in southern Afghanistan.
According to reports, the Afghan Meteorological Department is predicting more rain and flooding in 20 of the country’s 34 provinces in the coming days.
