New Delhi: Uddhav Thackeray, head of the Shiv Sena (UBT), decided not to participate in the event hosted by Raja Sab after the uproar over Rahul Gandhi’s reference to Hindu theorist VD Savarkar. Opposition meeting convened by Rajya Sabha Opposition Leader and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
“My name is not Savarkar and I will not apologize,” said Rahul Gandhi after he was disqualified as a senator after being convicted by a Surat court in 2019 in a criminal defamation case.
Sources in the Shiv Sena said the party was uncomfortable with the phrase, which has troubled the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition.
The development comes a day after Thackeray publicly called on Rahul Gandhi not to insult Savarkar.
While announcing his full support for Rahul Gandhi against the BJP, Thackeray reiterated his plea and urged Congress leaders to “not target our idol, Vir Savarkar”.
“I openly appeal to Rahul Gandhi…you have done a good job and fought for your country. But, Savarkar is our idol…we will not tolerate any insult against him,” Thackeray said later on Sunday. speaking at a rally in the Muslim-dominated town of Malegaon in Nashik.
