Visakhapatnam: There was a bandh and protests in the institutional area here on Friday, denouncing the government’s proposal to include the Boya, Valmiki and Bentuoria communities on the ST list.
Leaders of the various tribal associations that form a joint action committee on the issue have been gathering on the highway since the morning.
With the bandh call being made in advance, armed CRPF personnel and state policemen began to appear in large numbers from Thursday and took measures to prevent any mishaps and regulate traffic.
Fearing that the government’s decision will affect their lives, the protesters demanded the resignation of ST’s people’s representative and put pressure on the government to reverse the decision.
They also want other parties to clarify their positions on the issue.
