Vijayawada: On Thursday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy will introduce the concept of family doctor in Lingamguntla, Chilakaluripet assembly constituency. The family doctor concept was introduced by the state government to improve village-level healthcare with a focus on preventive care. Including the government, it has set up a PHC and a CHC in every Mandal.
Each PHC has 2,873 physicians and 15,516 medical assistants. Each PHC has two doctors, one of whom cares for OP patients at the PHC, while the other visits 104 Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) to mapped Village Health Clinics (VHCs) twice a month on a rotating basis. Every month, each doctor visits the same VHC and they are assigned to a maximum of 6-7 villages.
The Ministry of Health implements the directive of the Minister of Health, Medical and Family Welfare, Vidadala Rajini, to strengthen primary care institutions. As a result, the government approved 10,032 Dr. YSR rural health clinics, each serving an average of 2,500 people, instead of the 7,458 branches it had previously replaced.
Principal Secretary (HM&FW) MT Krishna Babu said, “A total of 1,293 PHCs are accessible and as many as 151 PHCs are sanctioned in addition to the existing 1,142 PHCs. To ensure that each village secretary accepts at least twice a month Visit, 936 MMUs were approved with 4 backup doctors per district and 1 backup doctor per CHC (173).”
