Guwahati: Nine people have been arrested for allegedly gang-raping a woman in the town of Hajo in Assam state, officials said on Friday.
The incident happened in the Tapabari Char area of the town and the victim’s family lodged a complaint on Tuesday.
The accused lured the woman with job prospects, but she was later gang-raped in the car, according to police.
Kamrup District Police Chief Hitesh Chandra Roy told IANS: “We acted quickly after we received the complaint. On Thursday night, we arrested the main accused, Altaf, who happened to be a taxi driver in Baksa. He was involved in the crime. All eight assistants were detained.”
Police also impounded the vehicle involved in the incident.
According to sources, the victim was a native of the Dhemaji area, and the incident sparked outrage among locals in her village.
