New Delhi: Superstar Shah Rukh Khan tops Time magazine’s annual TIME100 list poll, garnering more reader votes than soccer ace Lionel Messi, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and Meta CEO Markle Zuckerberg.
The “Pathaan” star received more than 4 percent of the 1.2 million votes cast, according to the US publication. In the poll, readers of the magazine vote for the person they believe deserves a place on TIME’s annual list of the Most Influential People.
Khan, 57, is currently rejoicing over the success of “Patan,” which became a global box office hit after its release in January. The film, a massive comeback for the superstar after an absence of more than four years, has grossed over Rs 1,000 crore globally.
Iranian women protesting against greater freedoms from the country’s Islamic regime came in second with 3 percent of the vote. Iran has been hit by protests since the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16. Amini was detained by Iran’s morality police in September, who said she did not properly cover her hair with the mandatory Islamic hijab. She collapsed at the police station and died three days later.
Iranian women were also named Time magazine’s Hero of the Year 2022 and won last year’s annual readers’ vote. Britain’s Prince Harry and his wife Markle came in third and fourth with 1.9 percent of the vote.
The Duke of Sussex made headlines in January after the release of his memoir, “Standby”, in which he wrote about intimate aspects of the British royal family. Messi, who led Argentina to the World Cup title last year in Qatar’s epic final against France, finished fifth with 1.8 percent of the vote. He won the World Cup on his record-breaking fifth attempt.
Other stars and big names who took part in the voting included this year’s Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh, former tennis player Serena Williams, Zuckerberg and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva . Its editors will unveil their picks for the 2023 TIME100 list on April 13, the outlet reported.
