Hoshyarpur: Seven pilgrims, including five women, who were celebrating Baisakhi at Khuralgarh Sahib in Punjab state were killed and 10 injured early Thursday after they were run over by a truck nearby, police said.
Police said the accident happened near Charan Choh Ganga Shri Guru Ravidass Maharaj in Sri Khuralgarh Sahib, about 55 kilometers away.
Garhshankar Deputy Superintendent (DSP) Daljit Singh Khakh said most of the dead were residents of Mastan Khera, Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh.
The area where the accident occurred was a sub-mountainous area, police said, adding that the truck driver lost control of his vehicle while driving over a slope and hit 17 walking pilgrims.
Police said the truck’s brakes were suspected to have failed.
The dead were identified as Rahul and Sandesh Pal, while the women were identified as Santosh, Angoori, Unati, Sita Devi and Ramoh, Khakh said.
Five seriously injured were referred to PGIMER Chandigarh while the rest were taken to Civil Hospital in Garhshankar.
In view of the Baisakhi festival, pilgrims flock to Khuralgarh Sahib, a place associated with Guru Ravidas.
