Hyderabad: In 1953, Osmaniya University awarded the first doctorate to BR Ambedkar, the father of the Indian Constitution. The late Nizam was very impressed with Ambedkar and invited him to the post of Chief Justice of Hyderabad.
The Nizam was deeply influenced by Ambedkar’s teachings and ideas during his time.
One should remember BS Venkat Rao who founded the Adi Dravida Society and was close to Dr Ambedkar. He formed a youth league and described its members as Ambedkarites. At his invitation, Ambedkar came to Hyderabad on 30 May 1936 to attend the Second Congress of the Union. In fact, Venkat Rao was then known as Hyderabad Ambedkar.
Recognizing the importance of the Dalit movement in Hyderabad, Ambedkar invited Venkata Rao in 1936 to preside over Mahal Sabha, the Bombay presidential palace.
Ambedkar also arrived in Hyderabad in 1934 to support the Dalits’ right to draw water from the tanks.
An Open University is named after him. Also, the newly built Telangana Secretariat Building, the nerve center of the state administration, is named after Ambedkar.
Hyderabad has now become a landmark with the tallest Ambedkar statue in the country installed in the center of the city.
