Hyderabad: The hapless family who burned to death in the Kushaiguda fire incident moved to the building four months ago.
Naresh (35) works as a driver for an LPG cylinder dealership and lives on the second floor of the building with his wife and two sons. While Naresh, Suma and Joshith were at their house, the couple’s eldest son went to visit relatives who lived nearby.
Neighbors said they had called Suma and Naresh to inform them of the fire. However, the call was answered.
Karpana, who lives on the ground floor of the building, recalled that at around 3:30 in the morning, she noticed thick smoke coming from the house and rushed out of the house, only to find that the timber warehouse was burning.
“I immediately notified my family and we all rushed out. Other tenants on the second and third floors rushed onto the patio and jumped onto the adjacent building,” she said.
Locals pointed out that they had protested the timber warehouse’s presence locally and demanded that the owners move elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali visited and inspected the scene together with police and fire department officials. Those who fail to comply with fire safety codes will be investigated and action taken, he said. “I will discuss with Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao the issue of timber warehouses and study the possibility of moving them to the outskirts of the city,” he said.
The Kushaiguda police have filed a case against the owner of the timber warehouse and are investigating.
