Mumbai: Legend Sachin Tendulkar penned a heartwarming note after his son Arjun made his IPL debut for Mumbai Indians against Kolkata Knights at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.
Arjun became the first son to play for the Indian Premier League (IPL) team that his father Sachin Tendulkar represented for many years.
Turning on the bowling, the left-arm seamer dropped five runs in his first over. He made a strong call for lbw against Jagadeesan but was denied by the referee as it looked like the ball would go over the stumps.
In his second over, he was caught off the backfoot by KKR’s Venkatesh Iyer before he batted on his next delivery, hitting a slightly misguided six.
In the end, Arjun came back 0/17 in IPL 2023, with Mumbai winning by five wickets despite Kolkata Knights’ Venkatesh Iyer breaking a century.
“Arjun, today you took another important step in your journey as a cricketer. As your father, someone who loves you and has a passion for the game, I know you will continue to give the game the respect it deserves and the game too. will love you.”
“You’ve worked really hard to get here and I’m sure you’ll continue to do that. It’s the beginning of a great journey. It’s going well,” he added.
Arjun, 23, has been with the Mumbai Indians for the past few years. He was selected in the 2021 auction but had to withdraw due to injury. He was also drafted in the 2022 auction but didn’t play in a game last year.
He got a chance with his father Sachin on the dugout of the Mumbai Indians on Sunday.
Arjun, who played age group cricket for Mumbai and made his T20 debut in the 2020-21 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, moved the league to Goa earlier last year and played against Rajasthan in the Elite Division. The race debuts in the Ranji Trophy December 2022 in Porvorim.
