Sudan violence: Indian embassy asks citizens to stay indoors

New Delhi: The Indian embassy in Khartoum on Tuesday advised all citizens not to venture out and to ration supplies amid intensifying fighting between the Sudanese army and paramilitary forces.

In advice to Indians there, the embassy said: “We have encountered many robberies. All Indian nationals are advised not to venture outside. Please ration. This situation may continue for a few more days. Please try to ask your neighbors for help . Please stay home and stay safe.”

This is the third warning issued by the Indian embassy since violence in the African country escalated on April 15.

On April 15, the Indian Embassy had urged all citizens to stay indoors, take utmost precautions and stop venturing out immediately.

“Indians planning to travel to Sudan should postpone their travel,” the embassy further said.

On April 16, the Indian embassy in Khartoum issued a second warning to citizens residing in Khartoum stating, “According to the latest news, the fighting has not subsided on the second day. We sincerely request all Indian compatriots to continue to stay.” Stay where you are, don’t venture outside. Please remain calm and peaceful. Stay away from open spaces such as balconies or patios. Keep essentials with you – medicine, water, money, passport, OCI card, food to ensure easy movement when feasible.”

On April 16, an Indian national working in Sudan died of gunshot wounds after violence erupted in the country.

Currently, as many as 31 Indian nationals belonging to the state of Karnataka are stranded in Sudan.

Sudan awoke on April 15 to explosions and gunfire following the culmination of a weeks-long power struggle between the two generals who seized power in the country following a 2021 military coup.

The two generals – Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, commander-in-chief of the Sudanese army, and Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) – are former allies.

The two teamed up to overthrow former Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir in 2019 and played a major role in the 2021 military coup.

However, negotiations to integrate the RSF into the Sudanese army as part of a plan to restore civilian rule in the country turned hostile when questions arose about who would command whom in the new regime.
