Hyderabad: Local boy Thakur Tilak Varma delighted the crowd with an impactful cameo (34 off 17, 2×4, 4×6), while Cameron Green capped off a brilliant half-century (64 off 40; 6×4, 2×6) kept the game going as Mumbai Indians beat Sunrise by 14 runs to secure their third straight victory at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad on Tuesday.

For a while, Mumbai’s totals looked mediocre. Thanks to Thilak’s knock, Mumbai managed a stunning 192/5 in the required 20 overs. The Sunrisers lost wickets on a regular basis and were tied for 178 in 19.5 defeats, succumbing to their second defeat at home in three games and third overall.

Chasing stiff goals, the Sunrisers lost Harry Brook and Rahul Tripathi – both to Jason Behrendorff – in four overs. Behlendorf eliminated Brook in the second and Tripathi in the fourth to force the hosts back. Mayank Agarwal and captain Aiden Markram tried to steady the innings, adding 46 for the third wicket. But Green sacked Markram (22 for 17) in the ninth. Piyush Chawla then got rid of Abhishek Sharma (1) in the next over to reduce the hosts to 72/4 in 9.1 overs.

Heinrich Klassen took Piyush Chawla to the cleaners, hitting two straight sixes and two bounds. However, he was caught in a long ball with the last ball and was sent off for 16 balls 36 (4×4, 2×6). He added 54 for the fifth wicket with Agarwal in 29 balls to revive hopes of victory. But Agarwal (48 for 41; 4×4, 1×6), pitched by Meredith in the 15th, was sent off, costing the hosts a chance as they went south from there.

Mumbai got off to a good start early on, with Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan adding 41 runs for the first wicket. Rohit scored a hat-trick in the third quarter to welcome Washington Sundar. T Natarajan provided the first breakthrough, sacking Rohit (28 for 18; 6×4), who tried to flick the ball over the center post but ended up passing it to Aiden Markram in midfield.

Kishan beat Bhuvneshwar for a half-wicket over six as Mumbai were 53/1 in the power play. Mayank Markande and Sundar played tight in the middle as the visitors were 80/1 from 10 rounds. Marco Jansen provided a double hit in the 12th inning. He dismissed Kishan first (38 for 31) when Markram caught him at midfield. After four balls, he got rid of Suryakumar Yadav. Also this time, Markram received the ball to the left at half-time.

However, local boy Tilak Varma gave the game a much-needed boost by hitting consecutive sixes off Jansen in the 15th innings. He then hit Markande for maximum and Bhuvneshwar for 6. But he failed when he tried to encore on the next ball in the 17th.

After Tilak dismissed get out of class, Green took center stage. He scored 20 runs from three straight boundaries in the 18th inning and hit his six-run half-century in 32 deliveries to give his team the lead. Mumbai have 62 points from their last five games.
