Warangal: As promised by Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, farmers who suffered crop losses in the former Warangal district in March last year due to unseasonable rain and hail will all be compensated within two or three days.
For the first time, the government is offering financial assistance to farmers who have suffered losses in just 40 days in record time.
Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who visited former Khammam, Warangal and Karimnagar districts on March 23, announced relief of Rs 10,000 per acre. He also directed officials to complete counts of crop losses and submit reports as soon as possible, allowing the government to help farmers.
According to sources, in the former Warangal district, 85,670 acres of land owned by 74,797 farmers were damaged. Crops including ready-made rice, corn, mangoes, etc.
Corn farmers are bearing the brunt of these rains, followed by rice. Other crops include mangoes, watermelons, bananas, dragon fruit and peppers. From March 17 to 21, rains hit the area. 60,936 acres of crops were damaged in Warangal district, 11,685 acres in Mahababad district and 6,209 acres in Hanamkhanda district.
Meanwhile, 4612 acres of crops were damaged in Jangaon district and 2115 acres in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district. Only 113 mu of crops were slightly lost in Murugu District. Officials said the government had issued an order on Wednesday night (March 19) to distribute Rs 85,67,34,250 in compensation to farmers. “We hope that the compensation amount will be credited to farmers’ bank accounts within two to three days,” an official said.
