Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy in Suryapet district levy paddy procurement review meeting
Surya pets: On Wednesday, Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy expressed dismay at the delay in purchasing paddy paddy by farmers in the region and warned that tough measures would be taken against any slack in the process.
Jagadish Reddy, who reviewed the procurement of paddy from farmers with district officials, said delays in procurement of paddy from procurement centers had resulted in damage due to uncharacteristic rainfall. He was surprised when officials told him that only 20,000 sacks of paddy had so far been procured from farmers in the area. He questioned officials on the reason for the low volume of paddy purchases despite the start of crop purchases at 213 centers about 15 days ago.
He warned officials that tough action would be taken if paddy purchases in the region were not expedited. Millers should also avoid inadvertently diverting purchased paddy from procurement centres. He directed officials to provide the required number of trucks and hams for this purpose. He stressed the need to support farmers who have suffered losses due to rice paddy damage caused by torrential rains. Wet paddy must also be purchased from farmers.
He directed officials to initiate criminal proceedings against those guilty of irregularities in Custom Milled Rice (CMR). Meanwhile, officials should also be concerned about CMR defaulters.
He made it clear that farmers need not worry about paddy soaking as the entire crop is purchased from them. Officials will list and prepare a report on crop losses from recent rains, he said. He also asked opposition leaders not to play politics over crop damage.
