Health and tech: Telangana tops institutional delivery

The statistic of 100% facility deliveries means not a single pregnant woman in Telangana will deliver at home in 2021-22

Hyderabad: Maternal and child health initiatives have been the cornerstone of the state government’s public health policy, making Telangana a standout in the country. In the Health Management Information System (HMIS) report 2021-22 recently released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Telangana is the only state in India to score 100 per cent for institutional delivery.

The statistic of 100% facility deliveries means that not a single pregnant woman will deliver at home in Telangana in 2021-22. Apart from Lakshadweep, no other Indian state in the country can boast zero home delivery rate in the country, according to HMIS data.

The labeling of 100% facility births also means that all pregnant women in Telangana, whether in private or government hospitals, have access to skilled nursing staff and, if necessary, emergency cesarean deliveries so that pregnant women can safely childbirth.

Nationwide, a total of 4.5% of births take place at home, with a large proportion of the population attended by unskilled personnel, according to 2021-2022 HMIS data. It is currently estimated that nearly 15 mothers will experience one or other life-threatening obstetric complication during and postpartum, necessitating the presence of skilled professionals during delivery.

The HMIS data also demonstrate the success of established healthcare protocols when implementing the KCR kit program for pregnant women. Total number of live births in Telangana in 2021-22 is 6, 06, 638 out of which number of babies weighing less than 2.5 kg is 3, 792 and number of newborns who are breastfed within one hour 4, 89, 875, close to 81%.

Much of the credit for the improvements in deliveries in Telangana institutions is due to the continued focus on maternal and child health through the KCR kit programme, nutrition kits for pregnant women, financial incentives for pregnant women who deliver in government hospitals, infrastructure upgrades in ICUs for infant facilities and upgrades in delivery wards.

HMIS also ranks Telangana as the best performing state in India for measles and rubella vaccine (MR), oral polio vaccine (OPV), hepatitis B vaccine and diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus and hepatitis B vaccines The inoculation rate reached 100%.
