'Operation Kaveri': Jeddah receives 8th batch of Indian evacuees

Jeddah: Foreign Minister V Muraleedharan received the eighth batch of 121 Indians evacuated from conflict-affected Sudan at Jeddah airport. The group also included family members of Indian embassy officials, MoS wrote on Twitter.

“Bold rescue! The 8th batch of 121 Indians arrived in Jeddah from Wadi Seidna, Sudan on IAF C 130 J. The evacuation was more complicated as the location was near Khartoum. Family members of our embassy officials were also part of this group Part. Warm welcome. #OperationKaveri,” Muraleedharan tweeted.

Muraleedharan called it a bold and complex rescue operation, briefing that the evacuees were located near the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, where violence between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces erupted.

Earlier on Thursday, Federal Foreign Minister V Muraleedharan received Indians rescued from Port Sudan in Jeddah under “Operation Kaveri”.

There were 135 passengers on board an IAF C-130J aircraft that landed in Jeddah from Port Sudan.

MEA spokesman Arindam Bagchi tweeted on Thursday the news of the evacuation of stranded Indian nationals from Port Sudan, saying the Indians were flown to Jeddah.

“7th batch of stranded Indians departs from Port Sudan. 135 passengers on IAF flight C-130J headed to Jeddah under #OperationKaveri,” Bagchi tweeted.

Continuing with the rapid mobilization of naval and air assets for the quick and safe evacuation of Indian nationals from Sudan, the INS Teg, which was on an anti-piracy patrol, was transferred to Port Sudan to aid in the evacuation process. INS Teg is the fourth Talwar-class frigate built for the Indian Navy.

Sudan is experiencing bloodshed due to clashes between the army and paramilitary forces. Despite the 72-hour ceasefire, there have been allegations of violence.

Fighting broke out between soldiers loyal to Sudanese army leader Abdul Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Mohammad Hamdan Daglo.

India, committed to ensuring no Indian nationals remain in Sudan, has deployed military aircraft and ships to the war-torn country.
