Hyderabad: On the occasion of cricketer Rohit Sharma’s 36th birthday, his fans in Hyderabad displayed a 60-foot model of him on the RTC X road. They poured milk over his life-size poster while blasting confetti and chanting slogans in support of the Indian captain.
“Looks like Rohit has more fans in Hyderabad after Mumbai,” one user tweeted, thanking them for their devotion to the idol. Interestingly, in addition to the decoupage, they also printed a smaller banner with a picture of the hero Jr. NTR. Some of them also danced with posters of heroes Nani and Arjuna.
Their big move, while loved by many, has also been met with some negative reviews. Die-hard SRH fans questioned why MI flags were being waved in Hyderabad, while fans of other cricketers like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar thought their idols were far better than Rohit Sharma. In addition, some people question the waste of milk.
Although putting up life-size billboards and banners is a worldwide phenomenon, there is something different about the paper-cut culture in India. Maybe it’s the pomp and splendor of these cuts drenched in fresh milk.
While it was originally reserved for superstar heroes and some politicians, cricketers are now enjoying the godlike treatment as well. A similar unveiling took place in the city last year on the birthday of former captain Virat Kohli.
