Pakistan PM Sharif, minister Hinakar's discussions on US-China dispute leaked: report

Islamabad: U.S. intelligence documents leaked on the Discord messaging platform reveal conversations between Pakistani Prime Minister Sheikh Baz Sharif and his deputy foreign minister Hina Rabanikar on foreign policy issues, media reported on Sunday.

In an internal memo titled “Pakistan’s hard choice,” Khar warned that Pakistan should avoid appearing to be “pacifying” the West, according to the Tribune, which was published in part by the Washington Post on Sunday. .

She warned that the country could no longer try to maintain a middle ground between regional neighbors China and the United States.

In the memo, Carr argued that maintaining Pakistan’s partnership with the US would ultimately sacrifice all the benefits of its “true strategic” partnership with China.

A report published by The Washington Post revealed that the undated document did not specify how the US obtained Khar’s memo.

The leak of US intelligence documents, mostly posted on social media sites, is considered the worst security breach since 2010, when more than 700,000 documents, videos and diplomatic cables appeared on WikiLeaks.

The incident exposed U.S. espionage against allies, including Pakistan, and alleged Ukrainian military weaknesses, embarrassing the United States.

The leaked documents offer a rare glimpse into the private calculations of influential regional powers such as India, Brazil, Pakistan and Egypt.

The documents also offer new insight into the hurdles the Biden administration faces in gaining global support for its efforts.

Another Pakistan-related leaked document, dated Feb. 17, described Prime Minister Sharif’s deliberations with an unnamed subordinate about an upcoming U.N. vote on the Ukraine conflict.

An aide told Sharif that backing the measure would mark a shift in Pakistan’s position, jeopardizing its ability to negotiate trade and energy deals with Russia, the document said.

Pakistan was one of 32 countries that abstained in the UN General Assembly vote on 23 February.

The Washington Post report further stated that Pakistani officials, as well as officials from other countries mentioned in the leaked documents, declined to comment.

The story comes as Washington has confirmed it does not object to Pakistan’s decision to import oil from Moscow.

“Each country will make its own sovereign decisions about its energy supply,” U.S. State Department spokesman Vedante Patel told a weekly briefing.

Matthias Spector, a scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, said developing countries are recalibrating their positions as the U.S. faces powerful new competition from China and Russia, according to Tribune Express.

“It’s not clear who will be the leaders in 10 years’ time, so they need to spread out and hedge their bets,” Spektor told the Post.
