Ashish Chaudhary advances to 80kg heats quarterfinals with impressive performance

Tashkent: Tokyo Olympian Ashish Chaudhary advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in the 80kg category after an impressive performance after a landslide victory here on Tuesday.
Chaudhary defeated 2021 Asian Championships silver medalist Iran’s Meysam Gheshlaghi 4-1 in a tough fight.
The energetic 28-year-old boxer from Himachal Pradesh showed his attacking intent in the first round as he kept his opponent at bay with a powerful jab.
The Indian, who holds a silver medal at the 2019 Asian Championships, used his deft movements and superior technical ability to overcome the Iranian boxer in the ensuing rounds to seal victory.
Chaudhary will now face a tough challenge from Cuba’s two-time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, debutant Harsh Choudhary withdrew after losing 5-0 to Australia’s Billy McAllister in the 86kg division.
Nishant Dev (71kg) will face 2021 World Championships bronze medalist Sarkhan Alliyev of Azerbaijan on Wednesday in his first bout in a field of 538 boxers from 107 countries, including several Olympic medals gainer.
