Bhubaneswar: President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district on Thursday, starting a three-day official visit.
The president touched down from West Bengal’s Kalaikunda airport at around 10:25 am at the Badampahar helipad in Mayurbhanj district, where she was welcomed by Odisha Governor Ganeshi Lal, Union Minister Bishweswar Tudu and State Minister Prafulla Mallik.
Shortly after landing on the helipad, Murmu went to her in-laws’ village, Pahadpur, where she laid a garland in front of a statue of her late husband Shyam Charan Murmu.
She also laid the foundation stone for the community center and skill development center that NABARD will build at the SLS Trust School. She spent some time with school students and villagers in her husband’s village.
From there, the President plans to visit the Brahma Kumaris Center in Satapautia Hatbadra, where she will launch the Addiction Free Odisha Movement. She is scheduled to attend a number of other events, including the inauguration of the 100-foot-tall flagpole where the national flag is flown near Badabandha, and will rest at an inspection bungalow in Rairangpur, officials said.
On Friday, she planned to visit her Rairangpur residence and spend about 20 minutes at the holiday home. From there, the President is expected to visit Dandbosh, the village of Pandit Raghunath Murmu, before heading to the Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) and spending the night in Baripada.
The President is scheduled to attend the graduation ceremony of Maharaja Sriram Chandra Bhanjadeo (MSCB) University in Baripada on Saturday. This is Murmu’s first return visit to his hometown after taking office as president.
Mayurbhanj district has tight security arrangements in view of the President’s first visit to her hometown. Some 50 platoons of police units were deployed at various locations.
