Hyderabad: The state government on Thursday strongly opposed Andhra Pradesh’s illegal and unauthorized diversion of Krishna water to meet demand outside the basin.
In a letter to the Chairman of the Krishna River Management Committee, Chief Engineer (Irrigation and CAD) C Muralidhar sought immediate measures to stop the diversion of Krishna River water. He urged KRMB to restrict Andhra Pradesh from carrying out the unauthorized Veligonda project, which is mainly used to divert water to areas outside the basin.
Citing media reports, he noted that work on the tunnel for the Veligonda project was being carried out at a brisk pace by the Associated Press. Works on the head regulator to release water from Srisailam reservoir to Nallamalasagar through Veligionda’s first tunnel have been completed. Work on the second tunnel, 5.52 kilometers long, started last year.
He maintained that the construction of the project without the DPR assessment and without obtaining the necessary permits from statutory bodies to further extend the diversion of the Krishna waters was a serious violation of the provisions of the AP Restructuring Act.
