Manipur violence: NCP chief says will discuss rescue of stranded students with Maharashtra CM

The northeastern state has been on a boil following clashes between the majority Meitei community and other tribal groups over a High Court order requiring the Manipur state government to consider adding the former to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) List.

Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chairman Sharad Pawar said on Sunday he will hold talks with Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shind to ensure that students in the state currently trapped in violence Attacked Manipur.

The northeastern state has been on a boil following clashes between the majority Meitei community and other tribal groups over a High Court order requiring the Manipur state government to consider adding the former to the Scheduled Tribes (ST) List.

Pawar told media on Sunday that the parents of several of the trapped students met him at his residence in Balamati and asked him to step in to ensure their rescue.

“Several students from IIT Manipur, Maharashtra, are trapped in the ongoing violence in the state. Many of their parents have come to me today, hoping that I can bring them back safely as soon as possible. As I am currently I am traveling and I will be speaking with CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis en route to speak about these students,” said the NCP patron.

Earlier, on May 3, the regional administration imposed a curfew in the Churachandpur district, one of the hardest-hit areas of the ongoing clashes, amid widespread unease and violence in the state.

However, the Manipur state government on Sunday partially relaxed the 7am-10am curfew to allow people to shop for essential items. The decision was taken after the security situation in the Churachandpur area improved after the state government held talks with various stakeholders, a notification said.

Amid ongoing violence in Manipur, Governor Sushri Anusuiya Uikey on Saturday called on the people of the state to maintain brotherhood and overcome fear and insecurity, an official press release issued by the governor’s office said.

In his statement, the governor said: “The violence and arson incidents that have occurred in the state over the past few days have disturbed brotherhood and peace. A number of brothers and sisters of the nation have also died suddenly during these tragic events. As the governor of the state, I Appeal to all of you, according to Manipur’s good coexistence, brotherhood and mutual cooperation, all of you should maintain brotherhood, remove fear and insecurity and cooperate with those around you.” Earlier, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh held a meeting with representatives of the Manipur Coordinating Council for Integrity (COCOMI) following the violence in the state.

Congress, NPF, NPP, CPI(M), Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena participated in an all-party meeting chaired by CM Singh to restore peace in the state as soon as possible.

CM Singh tweeted, “Given the prevailing situation in Manipur, a meeting was held with representatives of the ‘Coordinating Council for Manipur Integrity (COCOMI)’ to highlight the role of civil society organizations in bringing peace to the state. Crucial role this hour.”
