Nairobi: Kenyan investigators have exhumed 22 bodies from a suspected cult grave in the Kenyan coastal town of Malindi, a government official said.
Coast District Commissioner Rhoda Onyancha said on Saturday that 201 bodies had been exhumed since the mass grave was discovered in a field in the Shakahola forest in late April, Xinhua reported.
The number of people reported missing has risen to 610, Onyancha told reporters at the scene in Shakahola, adding that one suspect was arrested on Saturday, bringing the total to 26.
Most of the cult’s victims were children who were told by self-proclaimed priest Paul Nthenge to starve themselves so they could “meet Jesus,” investigators said.
The court granted police an application to detain Nthenge and his wife for 30 days.
Kenyan President William Ruto described the incident as terrorism.
