Hyderabad: Bear Grylls, a familiar face from Discovery’s survival show, embarks on a unique adventure deep in Ukraine and visits a war-weary nation to meet and tell the stories of its citizens.
Bell, accompanied by President Zelensky, walked the streets of Kiev to hear the story of one of the world’s most important figures.
Bear also interviewed Ukrainian citizens who were affected by the horrors of war, bereaved but lost hope for future victories.
A war is raging on Europe’s borders as Russia seeks to seize control of Ukraine. It was against this backdrop that almost a year after the invasion began, Bear Grylls ventured into Ukraine at the invitation of the president himself, Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky’s inspiring leadership has united his people. He has also won the admiration of millions around the world as the voice of his country during the conflict.
This observational documentary follows Bear on a 3-day journey deep into Ukraine. Years of survival training can never prepare you for an active war zone, and Bell and his team are taking enormous risks. Bell’s goal is to meet the Ukrainian commander-in-chief in Kiev, but before that, he needs to reach the capital and a country at war that isn’t so straightforward. This is a country that is constantly threatened by missile attacks. Russia is trying to plunge its neighbors into total darkness by destroying its energy infrastructure.
The film isn’t just about meeting the president, it’s about Bale’s journey to Kiev and what he sees and hears along the way. During his travels, he will meet the people of Ukraine, who are trying to endure and survive this war, and try to understand what life is like for them. He went to the old front line in the town of Irpin, just 10 kilometers from the capital Kiev. There Bear meets Oleksandr, a soldier who was only a civilian before the war began.
In this film, he hears stories of heroism, survival and tragedy, such as Alina the journalist who lost her father in the war.
It’s a journey no other Bear has taken. In this movie, Bear is not a survival expert; his job is to learn from other people and see what they’ve been through. When meeting with the president, Bell wanted to understand who was behind the presidency. See what his life is like away from the podium.
He will learn how Ukraine has survived this war through this dark winter. The meeting will not be held in the official Oval Office. Instead, the two of them took a friendly walk around the city of Kiev, where Bale got a chance to meet the real Vladimir – the man behind the headlines.
“War Zone: Bear Grylls Meets President Zelensky” premieres Monday (May 15) at 8pm on Discovery India and is also available on Discovery+.
