Umbrellas are being distributed to street vendors in the city. Several organizations including Access Foundation, Social Data Initiatives Forum, Springfield Schools are conducting distribution activities.
Hyderabad: Temperatures in the city have already surpassed 40C and are likely to continue rising in the coming days. Continuous summer showers over the past month have kept mercury levels in check, shielding residents from the heat.
Over the past few days, however, summer conditions have started to deteriorate, with the sun beating down hard and temperatures rising sharply around midday and afternoon.
For those who spend a lot of time on the streets, especially street vendors and cart vendors, the situation is made worse by the hot conditions of energy consumption in order to make ends meet.
A group of voluntary organizations and philanthropists from Hyderabad have come up with a new idea to distribute free umbrellas to owners of roadside carts and other hawkers in desperate need of protection from the heatwave.
So far, volunteers from the non-profit organization have distributed about 1,000 umbrellas in various parts of the city, including Mehdipatnam, Charminar, Falaknuma, Monda Market, Malakpet and other areas.
Madina and Global Group of Institutions Director Maria Arifuddin joined the students in the event, where she distributed around 100 umbrellas at the Monda Market.
“The hawkers do their business under the scorching sun. Noticing this, we came up with the idea of providing them with umbrellas to show our gratitude to them,” she said, adding that their group aims to reach out to the city. About 2,000 suppliers.
Saba Quadri of Help Hyderabad said they were reaching out to suppliers across the city with the help of volunteers. “Each umbrella cost us Rs. 500 and we are doing our best to give gifts only to the most deserving ones,” she said.
A number of other organizations, including the Access Foundation, the Social Data Initiative Forum (SDIF) and Springfield Schools, are also part of the collective ‘Hum Hyderabadi’, formed to collaborate and conduct canopy distributions.
