New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the validity of Tamil Nadu’s law allowing the sport of ‘Jallikattu’ to be practiced in the state.
The five-judge constitutional bench, headed by Justice KM Joseph, ruled unanimously and also upheld the validity of Maharashtra’s law allowing bullock cart racing.
‘Jallikattu’, also known as ‘eruthazhuvuthal’, is a bull training practice in Tamil Nadu as part of the Pongal Harvest Festival.
The bench also included Justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy and CT Ravikumar to rule on a series of petitions challenging Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra laws allowing ‘Jallikattu’ and bullock cart racing.
