Hyderabad: Hyderabad is feeling the heat in several ways as chicken prices have risen sharply in recent weeks.
In just over a month, the price of chicken has skyrocketed. Market prices on Thursday saw the price of skin-on chicken soar to Rs 213 per kg, a sharp rise from Rs 154 on April 1.
Similarly, the price of skinless chicken meat has also seen a sharp climb, reaching Rs 243 per kg on Thursday, compared with a cheaper Rs 175 per kg a month ago. Even at the farm level, prices have risen sharply, with the price of farm chicken rising to Rs 125 on Thursday from Rs 84 on April 1.

While price volatility in the poultry market is not unheard of, this sudden spike is directly related to weather conditions at the time. Poultry farmer Avula Mallarddy blames changing weather patterns for the high prices. “It rained heavily a few days ago and now, summer is at its peak. The sudden change in weather has resulted in a 40-60% mortality rate of chicks, which is distressing,” he said.
Poultry farmers and producers are also grappling with other consequences of the price spike. “Increased feed and transport prices have created challenges and made it difficult for us to keep up with market demand,” Reddy added.
