New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday slammed the government for withdrawing the Rs 2,000 note from circulation.
After the Reserve Bank of India announced the withdrawal of the Rs 2,000 note from circulation, Kharge said it had deeply scarred the economy after its 2016 demonetisation, saying only an impartial investigation could reveal the truth.
Responding to the government’s decision to implement demonetization on November 8, 2016, and to withdraw the Rs 2,000 note on Friday, Kharge said in a Hindi tweet that “the first demonetization has caused a deep blow to the economy. As a result, entire unorganized sectors have been destroyed, MSMEs have stagnated and millions of jobs have been lost.”
“The ‘second demonetisation’ on the Rs 2,000 note now… Is there a veil on the wrong decision? Only an impartial investigation will reveal the truth,” said Kharge.
The Reserve Bank of India said on Friday that it will withdraw the Rs 2,000 note from circulation, but it will continue to be used as legal tender until September 30.
The government had announced its decision to demonetize on 8th November 2016 and revoked the legal tender status of all Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in circulation at that time.
Even former Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram hit back at the government’s decision to withdraw the Rs 2,000 note.
In a series of tweets, Chidambaram said, “As expected, the government or RBI has withdrawn the Rs 2,000 note and exchanged the note by September 30. Rs 2,000 note is hardly a popular medium of exchange. We in 2016 We were right when we said this in November 2000. The Rs 2,000 note was a Band-Aid to cover up the stupid decision to abolish the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, which are popular and widely convertible currencies.
“After a few weeks of demonetisation, the government/RBI was forced to reissue the 500 rupee note. I wouldn’t be surprised if the government or the RBI also reissued the 1,000 rupee note. Demonetization is done!” he said .
Chidambaram also said: “The Rs 2,000 note was never a ‘clean’ note. It was not used by the vast majority of people. It was only temporarily used by people to store black money!”
