Tears of Kingdoms (ToTK) is quite possibly the best game you’ll play this year. Not only is it a sequel to the fantastic Breath of the Wild, but it also revolutionized the role-playing game genre.
The game seamlessly blends a beautifully simple gameplay structure with a nuanced world, offering countless possibilities for the player’s journey as Link. With Tears of the Kingdom, Nintendo proved that games can stay at the forefront of development practices, breaking down perceptions of the limitations of “obsolete” hardware. The game’s optimizations provide such a smooth experience that benchmarks and specs become irrelevant.
I’m writing this review after using ToTK for over 40 hours, nearly 10 hours of which were spent en route. From the moment I “disconnect” my console (at the start of the journey) to the moment I “reconnect” it (once I reach my destination), my experience is both uninterrupted and in sync.
In terms of gameplay, there are a lot of similarities to Breath of the Wild here, but the execution is very different. There are new abilities and skills here, and you can explore the world both horizontally and vertically, an experience that’s not only new, but changes the way we understand video game spaces.
Also, the game offers a unique approach to crafting, where you not only follow preset recipes (as do most games), but also offer items that can be combined with each other in a variety of ways for unique results, and you only Need to go back to your imagination. I really enjoy making, appending and merging because they allow me to push ToTK to its limits.
In terms of plot, a new enemy has appeared here, and you have encountered an ancient race called Zonai. Once again, Zelda and Link find themselves separated and must reunite to save Hyrule. As ToTK, Nintendo asks thought-provoking questions of players and developers, the epic saga continues to flow unimpeded.
ToTK is a must-play for Switch owners this summer, a strong contender for Game of the Year, leaving Hogwarts Legacy and Jedi in the dust.
