In agriculture, significant advances in artificial intelligence in crop yield prediction models are enabling farmers to make data-driven decisions. It is clear that the AI revolution in India did not happen by accident but is a reality unfolding before our very eyes.
However, this rapid progress towards a promising AI-centric future has been overshadowed by the apparent lack of comprehensive AI regulations. This regulatory vacuum casts a long and ominous shadow, bringing with it enormous challenges and risks, such as potential AI misuse and discriminatory practices. Without strict regulation, threats could range from AI deepfakes spreading misinformation to autonomous weapons causing widespread damage. Biased training data can fuel discriminatory practices, leading AI to make unfair decisions that exacerbate existing social inequalities.
Recognizing these global concerns, prominent AI visionaries such as Elon Musk, Stephen Hawking, and “Godfather of AI” Jeffrey Hinton have voiced their concerns, whose work drives many artificial smart system. Even OpenAI CEO Sam Altman testified before the US Senate on May 16, emphasizing the need for AI regulation. His argument is based on the potential misuse of artificial intelligence, citing dangers such as deepfakes and autonomous weapons that can kill without human intervention.

The regulatory framework should cater to India’s unique national challenges and be flexible enough to adapt to the rapidly evolving AI landscape, ensuring that AI systems are transparent, accountable and provide recourse for those negatively affected.
The current draft AI policy proposed by the Indian government focuses on responsible AI, data governance, accessibility and AI R&D strategies. While some experts lauded its potential to make India a global AI leader, the policy has drawn criticism for its vagueness and lack of implementation details. Critics argue that the policy’s broad scope lacks specific guidance on promoting responsible AI, protecting data privacy and democratizing AI accessibility, leading to concerns about its effectiveness. They argue that the policy overemphasizes the economic benefits of AI without meaningfully addressing potential social and ethical impacts, such as inequality and discrimination.
To further advance policy, India can draw on the UK’s AI governance framework, the EU’s AI Act, and the US National AI Initiative. The UK guidelines emphasize transparency and accountability for AI applications. The EU’s AI Act balances the benefits and risks of AI, notably introducing “high-risk AI” regulation. The U.S. initiative emphasizes a coordinated national strategy for AI and international cooperation. As India develops its AI policy, it should leverage its strong tech startup ecosystem and growing digital literacy while addressing challenges such as data privacy, digital divide, and AI capacity building. The goal is to ensure the inclusive benefits of AI, help India in its digital transformation and strengthen its position in the global AI arena.

The potential of artificial intelligence to transform the Indian economy is enormous. Projections suggest that AI could contribute up to $967 billion to the Indian economy by 2035 and around $500 billion to its GDP by 2035. Such transformative forces require strong regulation to maximize benefits while mitigating risks and challenges. Startups such as NIRAMAI, CropIN, and CogniAble are using artificial intelligence to address major socioeconomic challenges in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and neurodevelopmental disorders.
The United States is also stepping up. The government of Telangana has become a beacon for AI implementation. Their Real-Time Digital Authentication (RTDAI) program leverages artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning to authenticate pensioners and manage large public gatherings during the pandemic. Initiatives such as the Telangana AI Mission (T-AIM) and the Telangana State Artificial Intelligence Council (TSAIC) underscore the state’s commitment to becoming a global leader in AI through its focus on research, talent development, entrepreneurship and policy.
However, the potential risks and challenges posed by AI are enormous. As India stands at this technological crossroads, the decisions made today will shape the future of an AI-driven India. The challenges are great, but so are the potential rewards: creating a brighter, more equitable future for all. The country’s AI field is key to addressing some of its most pressing socioeconomic challenges, but a comprehensive, robust regulatory framework is critical to harnessing this potential responsibly and ensuring that civil rights and social harmony are not compromised.
