Hyderabad: Short-term study programs in the United States offer a variety of options for Indian students and working professionals looking to gain additional knowledge and enhance their professional qualifications. These courses can last for a summer, a month, a semester or an entire academic year. Short courses are ideal for those seeking US experience but may need help completing a full degree.
There are two main ways to complete short-term study in the United States. The first option is to participate in a university-sponsored or private exchange program.
Indian universities have established various exchange programs with American universities to enable Indian students to study on American campuses for a limited period of time. Under this arrangement, the student’s home institution usually pays the tuition, rather than the American university, which may be less expensive.
If an Indian university does not sponsor an exchange program in the US, students can apply directly to the US university as a “non-degree seeking” student or through a sponsoring institution. Alternatively, you may choose to participate in a government or private exchange program, such as the Fulbright Program.
The second option is to apply directly to a short-term non-degree or certificate program at a US university. These courses are designed for working professionals or recent graduates who wish to advance their professional credentials in their field of study. Certificate programs are offered in various areas of study, including music and art, business and leadership. Certificate programs provide an opportunity to complete degree-level courses and gain access to university and departmental facilities like degree-seeking students.
Non-degree-seeking students pay similar tuition and fees as full-time degree-seeking students. These projects can be financed using external funds and bank loans.
Search engines such as Petersons can help find non-degree or certificate programs, and transcripts, essays, and/or letters of recommendation may be required for applications.
If traveling to the United States for any purpose other than personal travel, an appropriate visa must be obtained. The most common visa categories for short-term study programs are the F-1 student visa and the J-1 student visa.
