Hyderabad: Netizens have turned to social media to express their frustration and concern over the sudden spike in airfares. They have been questioning whether the surge was due to the devastating train collision in Odisha.
Users have been tweeting about rising airfares and comparing airfare costs. The price appears to have tripled in just one day.
A one-way ticket from Kolkata to Hyderabad has risen to almost Rs 20,000 and from Kolkata to Bangalore to almost Rs 25,000 one-way.
Fact-checker Mohammed Zubair brought his ticket booking experience to his Twitter feed by adding a picture of the fare. “Yesterday I checked the air ticket from Kolkata to Bangalore, and it was 6.5K-7.5K. I was busy with work and forgot to book it. I checked today and the air ticket price has increased by 2-3 times. Is this after the train accident?” tweets.

Arun Bothra, an IPS officer from Odisha, also shared on his twitter a screenshot of the airfares from Kolkata to Bengaluru.
“Taking advantage of the train accident in Balasore, some operators raised the fares for buses bound for Kolkata. @STAOdisha intervened and punished them immediately. Yet airlines exploit distressed people with impunity. After every emergency like this , airfares will skyrocket,” he tweeted.

Many other netizens related to the tweets and expressed their views, while some disagreed.
“Same unidentified/unsubstantiated surge as I was in the finalization process – Vijayawada to Pune. It only increased by 1.5k when I booked!” wrote one user

“Delhi to Ranchi flights have seen the same type of exploitative surge. The minimum fare for direct flights is Rs. 27,000. This continues to rise and even breaks Rs. 40k. Train tickets are always on the waiting list or unbookable anyway.. ….” added a second user, who shared his experience.
The same type of exploitative surge was seen on Delhi-Ranchi flights.
The minimum fare for direct flights is Rs 27,000. This continued to rise and even broke Rs 40,000.

However, another user took a different view and explained the logic behind the price increase, writing: “I don’t think it’s because of an emergency. If you want to book a flight right away, the ticket price will be high. Tomorrow from there Cheapest flight from Gpur to Mumbai is 7.5k and then it goes up to 16k.”
I don’t think it’s because of an emergency. If you want to book a flight right away, airfares can be expensive. The cheapest flight from Nagpur to Mumbai tomorrow is 7.5k and goes up to 16k.
