Port-au-Prince: Haiti’s Civil Defense Agency said in a statement that heavy rains caused flooding to submerge houses across Haiti, killing at least 42 people and leaving 13,000 others homeless.

Heavy rainfall over the weekend flooded rivers in Haiti, causing flash floods, floods, rockslides and landslides, injuring 85 people and leaving 11 others unaccounted for, according to a statement issued Monday, CNN reported.

The displaced persons and missionaries come from five of Haiti’s 10 departments: West, Nips, South-East, North-West and Center.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry tweeted Monday: “My government is working with national and international agencies to take urgent measures to meet immediate needs.”

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned on Monday that flooding could resume with more rain in the coming days.

“If there is another heavy rainfall, the flooded soil will not be able to prevent further flooding, rockslides and landslides, and the temporary death toll may be higher,” CNN quoted the office as saying.

This danger is expected to continue into the hurricane season, which begins on June 1.

Meanwhile, emergency response teams and relief organizations have been mobilized.

“We will start delivering hot meals to the displaced within the next few hours and are mobilizing ready-to-eat rations and dry food,” the World Food Program said in a tweet.
