Hyderabad: Co-founder Vikram Prabhakar said Recykal, a tech startup founded in 2016, was on a mission to bring waste back into the economy and minimize its impact on the environment.
The company provides end-to-end digital waste management solutions. It connects waste collectors and recyclers, facilitating transactions between them.
Waste generation is a major issue, not only related to packaging but also to the products we use on a daily basis such as electronics etc. Recykal’s mission is to reintegrate waste into the economy and minimize its impact on the environment.
Using technology, Recykal builds solutions across the waste management ecosystem, generating significant value at scale.
Recykal’s solution is based on the B2B marketplace and addresses the challenges faced by waste recyclers across the country. Unlike other industries, waste management relies largely on informal processes, making it difficult for recyclers to seamlessly collect and dispose of waste. Recykal addresses these issues by connecting recyclers with aggregators across the country. The company operates a managed marketplace to ensure that recyclers receive the required quantity and expected quality of scrap on time, allowing them to operate the plant without worrying about sourcing material.
In addition to the marketplace, Recykal provides a platform that enables national businesses including Unilever, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and others to implement post-consumer waste collection and recycling programs. This is in line with producer responsibility regulations, which require the industry to collect and dispose of waste responsibly.
The startup is also working with local governments to digitize smart centers and collection centers, thereby increasing the efficiency of the waste collection process within the ecosystem.
“Come on with RecyKal” campaign
Recently, Recykal partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited to collect consumer waste at five retail outlets in Hyderabad. The campaign encourages customers to bring pet bottles and aluminum cans and place them in reverse vending machines to earn fuel points. The program also accepts dry waste such as plastic, paper, cardboard, e-waste, glass and metal and rewards consumers with fuel points. Recykal has developed a digital system to collect waste, provide credit compensation, and facilitate the valorization of dry waste.
Deposit return system
The deposit refund system introduced in Kedarnath last year facilitates mass waste collection directly from consumers. It encourages consumers to return their waste (plastic packaging or e-waste) in exchange for a refundable deposit paid at the time of purchase. The initiative aims to create a cleaner Kedarnath and won the Digital India Award. This year, Recykal implemented the system in Char Dham and plans to expand it to other parts of the country such as Goa and Nainital.
