Islamabad: Media reports said that for the first time, China, together with Pakistan and Iran, decided to find ways and means to deal with the terrorist threat facing the region.
For China, which supports CPEC projects in the region, this tripartite cooperation will go a long way in ensuring that security threats are addressed when these projects are completed, according to news reports.
China is also aware that ongoing border incidents on the border between Pakistan and Iran, where non-state actors carry out terrorist attacks within the borders of both countries, should be contained, the report said.
“The delegation held detailed discussions on the regional security situation, especially the terrorist threat facing the region. Based on the results of these consultations, the three parties decided to institutionalize trilateral consultations on counter-terrorism and security issues,” Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a weekly said at a media briefing.
“Further details will be worked out in due course,” foreign ministry spokesman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said.
Meanwhile, a foreign ministry spokesman issued a cautious statement as Pakistani Oil Minister Musadiq Malik visited the US to discuss the future of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline.
“As we have said in the past, this is an important project for Pakistan and we will continue to work on it. There are certain complexities in its implementation.
“In this case, we are still in touch with Iran and the US. The specific details of the oil minister’s meeting in the US may be determined from the relevant departments,” she said.
Meanwhile, Pakistan said it had seen a statement by Rear Admiral Shahram Irani, the commander-in-chief of the Iranian Navy, who proposed a maritime naval alliance including Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, India and Pakistan.
“When it comes to Pakistan, we will review the proposal. At this stage we are unable to comment on statements that have been made,” the spokesman said.
