Bhopal: In Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, her parents, upset that their daughter had married a man of a different religion, performed the last rites and severed ties with her.
The Jabalpur family performed “pind-dan” and “mrityu bhoj” in honor of their living daughter.
The family also issued a condolence card to inform relatives and members of society of the news of their daughter’s “death” on April 2.
Brahmin families from Jabalpur arrived on Sunday at Gwarighat on the holy river Narmada, where they performed their last rites and other posthumous rites.
The family did so shortly after the woman’s in-laws hosted a wedding reception. A family already disaffected by an interfaith marriage was humiliated when they saw invitations to the post-wedding reception read “Hindu girl converts to Islam”.
Due to the developments, the woman’s family staged a protest at the Jabalpur district SP office, which was backed by the right-wing Dharma Sabha. The family said the marriage was staged in a “love jihad” plot.
However, the couple got married on January 4, according to the district government. Authorities also said that family members on both sides were informed of the incident before it was registered. However, the woman’s mother told the media that her daughter “deceived” the family by marrying without their knowledge.
The local police also issued a statement confirming that “the marriage took place with the consent of the families of both parties. It also said that the woman’s family also prepared various gifts for the wedding.”
