Oppn slams Center over ex-Twitter CEO Dorsey claims

New Delhi: Opposition parties slammed the BJP-led NDA government on Tuesday after former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey claimed it had been threatened to close its offices or raid the homes of its employees.

Veteran leader and Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal slams government on Twitter saying, “Jack Dorsey ex-Twitter CEO says: BJP govt under threat during farmers protest. Shut down Twitter India office. Raid home of Twitter India employees.” Minister (Rajeev Chandrasekhar) denies. Some people have no reason to lie. Others have every reason to lie.”

Even Priyanka Chaturvedi, MP for Shiv Sena Rajya Sabha, hit back at the BJP government and said: “Social media is pretty strict in India,” said Elon Musk. The billionaire owner of Twitter says that if he had to choose between complying with the law or sending Twitter employees to jail, he would choose compliance. So everyone yelling at what Dorsey said is not true please sit down. “

She also included a link to a news report about Musk’s claim.

In another tweet, Chaturvedi said, “‘Twitter under Dorsey & his team keeps violating Indian law’, MoS IT says. Lol yes, the law they are violating is allowing hate speech & fanatic BJP agenda. But no crackdown or compliance issues because it supports their agenda. The moment the populace and the opposition start using the platform to fight back, the government cracks down! So save this little sermon.”

“By the way, even Elon Musk has publicly stated that the GoI’s repeated requests to remove content or suspend accounts is against his own belief in absolute FoS (Freedom of Speech). They comply because the GoI (Government of India ),” she added.

The opposition leader’s remarks came after Dorsey issued a statement in an interview. Asked if he had faced any pressure from foreign governments, Dorsey, who resigned from Twitter’s board last year, replied, “India, for example, is one of the countries that has made many demands on farmers’ protests, around criticizing particular journalists. Govt’s attitude and showing it with things like “We will shut down Twitter in India” etc… We will search your employees’ homes, which they did; “If you don’t follow suit, we will shut down your offices”. That’s it India, a democracy.”

Beginning in November 2020, farmers from several states staged protests along the Delhi border for more than a year. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has acknowledged failing to convince farmers and has called on them to call off the year-long protests. All three laws were withdrawn during parliament’s winter session.
