New Delhi: The National Council of Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has issued a notice to restaurant aggregator Zomato over a controversial advert showing Aditya Lakhia, an actor who plays the Dalit character Kachra in the film ‘Lagaan’, as made from recycled waste. thing.

NCSC also asked the Delhi Police Commissioner and YouTube’s Resident Complaints Officer to look into the matter.

The ad, which aired on June 5, World Environment Day, links the character Kachra to “kachra,” the Hindi word for trash.

In the nearly two-minute ad, Lakhia is depicted as a lamp, a sheet of paper, a paperweight, a watering can and different types of jackets — with accompanying text detailing how much recycled “kachra” was used for each item.

In the notice, the commission asked Zomato to explain the advertisement and its details.
It asked the Delhi Police Commissioner as well as YouTube’s resident grievances officer to look into the matter and immediately submit a report by post or email that action has been taken.

NCSC chairman Vijay Sampla has warned officials that if a report for action is not received within the stipulated time, the commission may exercise its powers of civil courts under Article 338 of the Indian Constitution and issue summonses to appear in person before it. delhi.

Zomato removed the ad after it came under fire for its caste system. The company issued an apology on its official Twitter account and said it aimed to “spread awareness of the potential of plastic waste and the benefits of recycling in a humorous way”.
