Hyderabad: Weddings, housewarmings and other festive events will be suspended for an extended period of two months. Since there are no auspicious days in the Hindu calendar, all events will take a backseat as this year the month of Ashadam runs from June 19 to July 17 and the month of Adhik Shravanam begins on July 18 and runs until August 16.
As events are not scheduled to resume until after these two months, the function room will be vacant. It will be a difficult two months for those working in multipurpose halls and those associated with related departments that depend on them.
B Vijay Kumar, Fr. Sri Bhavani Shankar Devalayam, Bholakpur, this extended period is because of this year’s ‘Adhika masam’. “No auspicious rituals are performed during the month of Ashadam. This year Adhika Masam falls just after Ashadam, so we have ‘Adhika Shravanam’ which extends the number of days when no auspicious rituals are performed.”
This year the month of Ashadam is from 19th June to 17th July and from 18th July to Adhik Shravanam to 16th August. Shravana masam will begin on August 17, when all auspicious rituals will resume.
Vijay Kumar added, Adhika Masam, which means an extra month, immediately after Ashadam, does not happen every other year.
Although there will be no ceremonies such as weddings, engagements or Vodugu (threading ceremony) for the next two months, Ramamurthy Pantulu of the Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Musherabad said now is the best time to visit religious shrines. “We call it Adhika Masam in colloquial language, but in Sanskrit it is actually called ‘Purushothama Masam’. It is recommended to visit as many religious shrines as possible and perform worship,” he said, adding that during the may reap more blessings. He said that over the next two months, he would encourage more charitable activities, such as donating clothes and items, or providing meals to the vulnerable.
