Hyderabad: To keep low-lying areas from being inundated during monsoons and downpours, the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has undertaken 968 stormwater drainage-related works at a cost of Rs 5,337.9 crore during 2022-23.

These works included remodeling of the gutters. Of these, 462 projects have been completed at a cost of Rs. 2,161.1 crore and the rest are in various stages of implementation.

Similarly, in 2023-24, 478 works were completed at a cost of Rs 3,208.3 crore and GHMC completed one project at a cost of Rs 0.85 crore in the current financial year. The remaining 477 works costing Rs 3,199.8 crore are in various stages of execution.

In addition to strengthening the city’s stormwater drainage network, GHMC also desilts the city’s stormwater drainage/nalas to prevent flooding in low-lying areas and standing water on roads.

In 2022, a total of 371 desilting projects costing Rs 563.1 crore were approved and 374,000 cubic meters of silt were removed. In 2023, a total of 56 projects have been approved at a cost of Rs 536 million and 68,000 cubic meters of desilting work has been completed.

Repair Naras before the monsoon

As part of monsoon preparations, the GHMC has completed the identification of areas that need strengthening along the nalas, and the restoration of the nalas and safety measures such as building retaining walls and displaying signs are currently underway.

GHMC’s Assistant Engineer (AE) and Deputy Executive Engineer (DEE) were assigned to ensure the safety of the nalas.

According to the order issued by the GHMC commissioner, if an unfortunate incident occurs due to the lack of safety measures in nalas, AEs and DEEs will be held accountable and disciplinary action will be taken.

“The engineers are supposed to submit a report to the GHMC commissioner related to nalas in their respective jurisdictions by the end of this month,” said an official at the civic agency.
