Hyderabad: An hour of clean jokes and witty personal stories – Saikiran Rayapolu’s scenes are always packed as he deftly delivers one joke after another. The Hyderabad stand-up comedian stands out for his ability to captivate and amuse his audience with his ‘vegetarian’ humor.
When he performed his routine “Pure Vegetable Jokes” at the Guruswamy Center in Secunderabad recently, Telangana today Caught up with the comedian for a quick chat.
As Saikiran enters his 10th year in comedy, he recalls his humble beginnings when he won the open mic competition in January 2014.
The former research consultant became a sensation in 2019 when his videos “Dark Skin” and “Married” went viral on WhatsApp and social media platforms.
When asked how he discovered comedy, Sekiran said he always knew about the art form and was intrigued by it.
He watched a lot of American stand-up acts as a kid and said he tried comedy when he first started in Hyderabad.
“A man walks on stage, faces a housefull audience, and has to make a crowd of strangers laugh—no instruments, no props. To me, it’s an amazing art form that gives artists an excuse to reflect on our most Deep thoughts, and sharing them with strangers and eliciting laughter. It’s a very cathartic experience,” he shared.
Saikiran mainly focuses on clean comedy, which he found a good fit due to his focus on family and everyday life observation. However, he tends to keep a wider view, albeit without living up to audience expectations.
“Also, many viewers and venues in Hyderabad were initially apprehensive about watching and hosting comedy, but I think my commitment to clean comedy has helped in both,” he added.
Speaking of Hyderabad’s stand-up scene, Saikiran believes the city is fast becoming a hotbed for the art form. However, he added that Telugu stand-up performances should be further developed in the city.
