Lausanne: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) withdrew its recognition of the International Boxing Association (IBA) as the global sporting body for boxing at a special session of the IOC on Thursday.
The IOC Executive Board (EB) recommended to the IOC Session last month that the IBA’s accreditation be revoked after the sporting body failed to meet the conditions set by the IOC to lift the suspension of IBA accreditation.
The executive board’s recommendations were approved at a special session of the IOC held online on Thursday.
“Following the advice of the IOC Executive Board (EB), the IOC’s teleconference revoked its accreditation to the International Boxing Association (IBA),” the IOC said in a statement.
“The decision is based on the IOC’s comprehensive report on the IBA situation discussed by the IOC Executive Board on 7 June,” it added.
The IOC originally suspended the IBA (then known as the AIBA) in 2019 because of issues with its referees and referees, financial stability and governance, among other issues. This has led to the IOC directly managing boxing for Tokyo 2021 and qualifying for Paris 2024.
Throughout its 129-year history, the IOC has never prohibited any international governing body from supervising a sport.
