Hyderabad: Lush greenery, inattentive tourists, rustling leaves and singing birds, in the peaceful embrace of Kasu Brahmananda Reddy (KBR) Park, a weekend tradition of silent reading called “Hyderabad Reading” brings the city to life. of book lovers.
Every Saturday afternoon from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, bibliophiles gather in the garden area behind the Ganesha statue with their favorite books and cushions or bedspreads.
The Quiet Reading Community started in June by Priyanka Peeramsetty and Sloka Chandra of Hyderabad to encourage reading. Members can read books of any genre and language in silence, without any discussions, topics or agendas.
“We have always wanted to be part of such a community that is inclusive, safe and welcoming to all. When Cubbon Reads started in Bangalore, we envisioned creating such a community in the city and have been working to make it happen.” 23 years old said Sloka, an educational consultant at .
Priyanka, a 31-year-old management professional, added that there is no age limit to attend the meeting. She said people could bring any type of book or Kindle. There is no pressure to make any intellectual contribution.
“Most people are from the 25-30 age group. Last time, a six-year-old girl joined the community. It was exciting to see her among us. We also welcome primary and university students to bring study materials,” she added , “I even took my 52-year-old mother to the park. She’s an avid reader and loves spending time there.”
About 50 people attended the quiet reading, and the tribe is expected to grow in the coming weeks. Organizers are also planning to host these sessions on Sunday and will be updating the same on their Instagram page @hyderabadreads.
